How could I get better at Chemistry?
Q. I'm taking AP Chem this year. I was kind of pressured into taking it, and now I am rethinking my decision.. I wasn't even that great in regular chemistry last year, yet miraculously got an A due to my easy teacher. Doing the summer assignments for AP Chem is really frustrating because I don't understand some of the problems, even with it all worked out in front of me. I'm thinking about getting a tutor but that's about it. What can I do to actually understand and get better at this difficult subject?

A. The only real way to get better at chemistry, or any subject for that matter, is to study. Do practice problems, ask questions, do more problems, ask more questions. And do this until you do understand what is going on with whatever topic is being discussed. Also, though a hard concept to accomplish, try to avoid negative thoughts. When I was a chem teacher I found the biggest obstacle for many of my students was out thinking themselves and thinking that they were not able to do it so why bother. They came in thinking chemistry was some monster that couldn't be slayed. With attention to the subject and curiosity, it can be. A tutor is likely a good idea, but first see if your school offers some sort of tutoring before going to a… [cont.]
